Ove Andersson has died in a car accident while competing in the South African Continental Milligan classic car regularity rally this morning.
Andersson was a top world rally driver and was also the man behind taking Toyota into Formula 1. The left-hand Volvo which Andersson was driving was involved in a head-on collision with a car travelling on the wrong side of the road while it was overtaking a truck on a twisting section of the George road approximately 20km outside Oudtshoorn.
Andersson's navigator and the owner of the car, Tubby Bennett was injured and rushed to hospital.
Swedish Andersson had partially settled in South Africa since retiring from his post as world motorsport boss of Toyota.
Today's stage of the Continental Tyres Milligan Rally has been cancelled but the event is expected to resume tomorrow. The Milligan is an annual event that is running for the 39th time this week.
